Workshops with the Textile Circle by Lucie Verhelst

Workshop 1

Experimenting with embroidery, an introduction to discover your own voice.
Friday 7 February or Saturday 8 February, 9.30am – 12.30pm and/or 1.30 – 4.30pm
You can choose to do just the morning/afternoon or stay the whole day.  Max 4 people
3hrs = $45 and 6hrs=$90
Morning/afternoon tea provided.  Please BYO lunch if you stay all day.
Most of us know a few embroidery stitches, like running -, back -, or blanket stitch. In this workshop we will look at them individually and take these to a next level.  You will start with a basic stitch and find new ways of using it, creating different textures  and rhythms. This is a playful way of experimenting and will give you new ideas to use for a next project. This can be: personalising your clothes, decorating soft furnishings, making
your own textile pictures, etc.
For each basic stitch you will make a small sample cloth with experimentations, which will become a handy resource. It can grow into a book with your own stitch-vocabulary.
Expect brainstorming, playing, expanding, more inspiration.
After this workshop you can join the Slow Stitch Tuesday:
– continue on, experimenting with more stitches
– create something of your own choice
Throughout the year Slow Stitch Tuesday will run every fortnight, starting on Tuesday 11 February, 10am – 12.00 noon. If you pay per month it costs $25 per session or otherwise $30 casual. Materials and coffee/tea provided.

Workshop 2
Upcycle a business shirt into a dress
Friday 6 or Saturday 7 March,
10 am – 4 pm. Max 3 people Price: $90
Morning/afternoon tea provided
BYO: shirt and lunch
There is an abundance of business shirts in the opshops or you may even have a few at home.
The best ones to use for this project are made of
natural fibres, they are light and flowy. Count
yourself lucky if you have a large one to play with,
the more fabric the better!
Expect a lot of experimenting, cutting, pinning,
changing, adding, hand sewing, and maybe some
machine sewing. And of course: laughter.
If you like more time to work on your dress, there is
an option of a casual follow-up session at a date and
time of your choice. I am asking a total of $60 for 2
hours, so your fee is depending on how many
people join in.
Or you can join the Slow Stitch Tuesday, where
everyone gets support with their individual project.

Workshop 3
Textile Collage
a Saturday and weekday in April, to be advised,
9.30am – 12.30pm and/or 1.30 – 4.30pm
You can choose to do just the morning/afternoon or stay the whole day. Max 4 people
3hrs = $45 and 6hrs=$90
Morning/afternoon tea provided.  BYO: pins, needles and lunch if you stay all day.
This is a very good way of using up fabric scraps that are too beautiful to part with; some might have special memories. All the work is done by hand and therefore the outcome will be different to the machine stitching workshop. The emphasis here is on the process of slow stitching. The pieces of fabric remain more visible and therefore allowing more opportunity to highlight certain prints or textures. You will learn how to start a collage and how to build it further into a larger surface, through various embroidery stitches. We will talk about colour, composition and texture.
The aim of this workshop is learning a new skill and enjoying the process without needing to have an end product. At the end of the workshop you have a small textile piece that can be used in many creative ways: a feature pocket, little bag, wall hanging, etc. It can also be the beginning of a bigger project: a cushion cover, quilt, or even a skirt with a story!
Expect playing, exploring, new inspiration. It is encouraged to bring some of your own fabrics/threads that you like to use in your work.
After this workshop you can join the Slow Stitch Tuesday.
